STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (18-7, 8-6) jumped out to a 17-4 lead early en route to a 67-60 win over UW-La Crosse (15-10, 7-7) in the regular season finale.
Senior
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) posted her second-straight double-double with 26 points and 14 rebounds, game-highs in both categories.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) were also in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Rice, Gawlitta and
Brenna Gehri (Oshkosh, Wis./West) all hit three-pointers and the Pointers took a 17-4 lead out of the gate.
Thomson and Gawlitta had four points apiece in the second quarter and the Pointers held a 30-23 advantage at the half.
Karissa Smith (Freedom, Wis./Appleton North) buried a three and Thomson completed an and-one. Thomson added eight more in the quarter as UWSP held a 52-46 lead through three quarters.
Gawlitta, Thomson and
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) each made an early bucket to push the lead back to double digits. Gawlitta and Thomson each made one more basket, but UWL got within three in the final minute. Rice and Thomson went 4-for-4 from the free throw line to seal the win.
The Pointers clinched the four-seed and will host UW-La Crosse in the WIAC Tournament First Round on Tuesday (Feb. 25) at 7:00 p.m.
