EAU CLAIRE, Wis. –
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) only shot one three-pointer on the day and it beat the buzzer for a 60-59 comeback win for the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (16-7, 6-6) at UW-Eau Claire (8-15, 3-9) on Saturday. The win secures a spot for the Pointers in the WIAC Tournament.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) led the Pointers with 17 points and six rebounds.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) and
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) were also in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Gawlitta had nine points.
Thomson scored UWSP's first five points of the game, but the Pointers trailed 19-5 with less than two minutes left in the first quarter. Rice added four points and UWSP was down 22-12 after one.
Gawlitta and Rice combined for six points and
Lily Truchon (Herbster, Wis./South Shore) scored three as the deficit widened to 34-21 at the half.
Thomson had four points early in the third quarter. Krueger and
Maddie Murphy (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas) each buried a three. Rice had four points late as UWSP got within 45-37 heading to the fourth.
Thomson, Gawlitta and Krueger had two points each, but the Pointers trailed by 13 with 5:19 to go. Krueger drained a three to spark a massive rally. She added two more points, Rice scored three and Thomson had four as UWSP used a 12-0 run to get within one in the final minute. UWEC made three free throws and the Pointers were down two in the closing seconds. Gawlitta heaved up a three that went in just as the buzzer went off, the only lead of the game for the Pointers.
UWSP will be home for the final two regular season games starting on Wednesday (Feb. 19) against UW-Stout. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in Berg Gym.
