STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (16-7, 6-6) was on the short end of a late 6-2 run as visiting UW-Eau Claire (15-8, 7-5) got a 66-62 win over the Pointers.
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) led all scorers with 24 points.
Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) and
Logan Baumgartner (Medford, Wis./Medford) were also in double figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Abdul-Wahid had UWSP's first four points. Baumgartner and Butler each nailed a three and
Carter Combs (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) gave UWSP a 19-18 lead. Butler hit another three-pointer in the final minute and the team were deadlocked at 26-26 at the half.
Butler began the second half with a made three. Baumgartner and Butler hit back-to-back threes, but the Blugolds quickly pulled even at 41-41. Abdul-Wahid powered down a dunk and
Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) drained a three as the teams traded leads.
Butler hit his fifth three-pointer of the game with 1:53 remaining for a 60-57 lead. UWEC scored the next eight points and two Butler free throws was all UWSP could muster late.
The Pointers hit the road for the final two regular season games starting at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday (Feb. 19) at UW-Stout.
