STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Freshman
Grace Peters' (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) first career goal sent the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (9-4-8) through to the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) semifinals. The Pointers advanced with a 2-1 double-overtime win over visiting UW-Whitewater (8-7-5) on Wednesday.
The teams played to a scoreless draw over the first 45 minutes of play. UWSP goalkeeper
Ainsley Katte (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) had consecutive saves in the 15th minute to keep the game scoreless early.
UWW broke the tie in the 64th minute on the Warhawks' first shot of the second half.
In the 90th minute, the Pointers earned their eighth corner kick of the match.
Kayce Wadas (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) and
Christa Borchardt (New Berlin, Wis./West) orchestrated a short corner and Wadas lifted the ball to the back post.
Sophia Ryan (Orland Park, Ill./Victor J. Andrew) connected on a strong header for the equalizer with 53 seconds left in regulation.
The first overtime saw neither team break the tie. But in the second overtime, it was another corner kick by the Pointers that would be the difference. Wadas served the corner kick to an unmarked Peters, whose header back to the near post won it for UWSP in the 103rd minute.
Katte made two saves in the win. UWW goalkeeper Kara Smith made four saves.
The Pointers will travel to UW-La Crosse on Friday (Nov. 7) for a 4:00 p.m. semifinal matchup.
