CHICAGO, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (5-1) dropped a heartbreaker in triple overtime as North Park (4-1) hit a buzzer-beater for a 115-114 win.
Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) poured in a career-high 34 points to lead UWSP. He made 10 field goals and had 13-made free throws.
Cal Krohn (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West),
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) and
Logan Baumgartner (Medford, Wis./Medford) were also in double figures with 25, 24 and 21, respectively. Baumgartner led all players with eight rebounds.
Miron and Baumgartner each hit a three early as UWSP went up, 10-5.
Grant Manz (Kiel, Wis./Kiel) added four points and Miron had a stretch of seven-consecutive for the Pointers. Butler scored eight points late and the Pointers led, 43-26, at the half.
Baumgartner scored the first points of the second half for UWSP. Miron added eight points as the lead remained double-digits midway through the second half. Miron and Krohn had eight points each as the Vikings stormed back to force overtime.
Butler had four points late in the first overtime as five extra minutes solved nothing.
Baumgartner drilled two three-pointers in the second overtime, but NPU rallied late again to force a third overtime.
Butler scored seven points in the third overtime and UWSP had a slim 114-112 lead with 5.4 seconds remaining. NPU hit a three from the corner as time expired to hand UWSP its first loss of the season.
The Pointers are back home on Saturday (Dec. 6) to face North Central at 3:00 p.m. It is Youth Honor America night and the Pointers are holding a toy drive. Fans are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy for donation.
