STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis defeated UW-Eau Claire on Friday, 4-3, the first win by the Pointers in the series since at least 1998. Available records since 1998 indicate the win breaks an 0-29 streak dating to Oct. 17, 1998.
The Pointers got the team doubles point with No. 1 pairing
Ellie Aitken (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) and
Tristin Jantz (Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) picking up a 6-4 win and No. 2 duo of
Chloe Regal (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) and
Annie Wierzbicki (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) winning 6-1.
In single play, Regal, the reigning WIAC Player of the Week, got a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles.
At No. 5 singles,
Brooklynn Steier (West De Pere, Wis./West De Pere) earned a 6-4, 6-1 win.
The match was tied at 3-3 with Jantz and No. 2 playing in the decisive match. She dropped the first set narrowly, 7-5. In the second set, Jantz scored a 6-2 victory to force a third set. There, she prevailed, 6-4 to give UWSP the win.
The Pointers are back in action on Saturday (Oct. 4) with an 11:00 a.m. match against UW-La Crosse.
