EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (14-11) split matches at the UW-Eau Claire Tournament on Saturday. The Pointers were swept by No. 6 Illinois Wesleyan (18-2) before earning a 3-1 win over Augsburg (8-13) to close out the weekend.
Junior
Samantha Kempinger (Oshkosh, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) recorded her first career double-double with a team-high 14 kills and 15 digs in the win over Augsburg. She also served two aces and added three blocks.
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) added 10 kills against the Auggies and had a double-double of her own with a team-high 15 digs.
Hannah Strege (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) was in double figures in assists in both matches totaling 36 on the day.
Abby Nevins (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) led the Pointers in digs against IWU with 17.
Savanna Moe (Saint Paul, Minn/St. Croix Lutheran Academy) tied her season-high with 12 digs versus the Auggies.
Game 1 – UWSP 0, IWU 3 (22-25, 19-25, 22-25)
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had three aces in the first set as the Pointers tied the set at 13-13.
Logan Cregan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) had two kills late as the Pointers dropped the opening set.
Shaw and
Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) combined for five kills in the second set as UWSP played from behind after a 6-0 run by IWU.
Ella Trieloff (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Viator) had two kills late as UWSP fell behind, 2-0.
Six different Pointers had a kill in the third set with Paukner and combining for five as the Titans finished the sweep.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, Augsburg 1 (25-12, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20)
Thomka had a kill and an ace as UWSP jumped ahead 5-1. Shaw added an ace and two kills for a 9-3 advantage. Nevins served an ace and Thomka had consecutive blocks for a 19-6 lead. Kempinger had a pair of kills as the Pointers took the first set.
Kempinger and Shaw combined for five kills as the Pointers went in front, 9-5 in the second. Trieloff had a pair of kills late and Kempinger gave UWSP a 2-0 lead with a set-ending kill.
Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) and Kempinger had two kills each as the third was tied, 6-6. Paukner added four kills in the set as the Auggies pushed the match to a fourth set.
Kempinger had a kill and served two aces for a 4-1 start to the fourth. Shaw and Larson had two kills apiece as the lead grew to 13-6. Kempinger had two kills late and a block as UWSP won in four sets.
The Pointers head back to Eau Claire on Wednesday (Oct. 22) for a conference matchup against the Blugolds. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
