Wiczek Snags Second TD of the Year in Homecoming Game Versus UWRF

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (3-3, 0-3) fell to visiting No. 12 UW-River Falls (5-1, 2-1) by a 52-7 final on Saturday in the Homecoming Game.

Quarterback Charlie Smith (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) completed 13 passes for a season-high 212 passing yards. He connected with Brayden Wiczek (Minocqua, Wis./Lakeland Union) five times, including the lone touchdown of the day for UWSP.

Defensively, the Pointers tied a season high with two fumble recoveries, both fumbles forced inside the five. Jack Luedtke (Plymouth, Wis./Plymouth) recovered both fumbles with Gregory Westemeier and Charlie Anderson (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) forcing the fumbles. Joe Berens (Wausau, Wis./West) again led UWSP in tackles with 14.

UWRF intercepted a Smith pass on the first play from scrimmage. The Pointers' defense gave up just six yards and caused a turnover on downs to get the ball back. After a three-and-out by UWSP, the Falcons went 55 yards in seven plays to put the Pointers in a 7-0 hole.

On UWRF's next possession, Anderson stripped the ball at the one yard line and Luedtke recovered it at the seven.

As the second quarter began, the Falcons drove inside the UWSP 10. Westemeier stripped the UWRF receiver at the four and Ludtke again recovered for UWSP at the eight.

The Falcons found the end zone on their next drive and returned an interception on the ensuing UWSP drive for a 21-0 score.

The Pointers got to work on the next drive. Smith and Brycen Cashin (Plover, Wis./Pacelli) combined to gain 47 yards on four plays. Smith gained 15 more yards on the ground and he hit Andru Miller (Plymouth, Wis./Plumouth) for 17 yards to get the Pointers to the red zone. Lucas Milz (South Wayne, Wis./Black Hawk) gained three yards and, two plays later, Smith completed a touchdown pass to Wiczek to get UWSP on the board.

In the second half, UWRF scored a touchdown on each of its first four possessions and kicked a field goal to complete the scoring. The Pointers gained three first downs in the second half.

The Pointers travel to UW-Stout on Saturday (Oct. 25) for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff in conference play.
