EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (13-10) dropped the opener of the UW-Eau Claire Tournament to Cornell (12-7) in five sets on Friday.
Ella Trieloff (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Viator) led the Pointers with 14 kills.
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) added 10.
Hannah Strege (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) posted another double-double with a match-high 42 assists and 13 digs.
Abby Nevins (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had a team-best 26 digs.
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and Shaw had consecutive kills to open the match. Trieloff had her first kill of the day to halt a 5-0 run by Cornell. Trieloff added two more kills as the Rams held off the Pointers for a 25-21 set one victory.
Strege and
Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) had a kill and a block each as UWSP took a 4-1 lead in the second. Strege and Shaw each served an ace as the Pointers went up, 10-4. Trieloff and
Logan Cregan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) had two kills each in a 10-0 run ending with an ace from
Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo). Paukner finished the set with a kill as UWSP evened up the match with a 25-14 win.
Cregan, Trieloff and Paukner combined for seven kills as UWSP went in front 11-8 in the third. Nevins had an ace in a 5-0 run for a 21-13 lead. Thomka had two kills late as UWSP took the third set, 25-15.
Paukner had a kill and a block as UWSP trailed 15-4 in the fourth set. She had another kill late as UWSP dropped the set, 25-12.
Trieloff had three consecutive kills to put the Pointers ahead, 5-4, in the fifth. Paukner, Thomka and Shaw each had a kill as Cornell used an 8-1 run to take the fifth set by a 15-11 final.
The Pointers will face Illinois Wesleyan and Augsburg in Eau Claire on Saturday (Oct. 18) at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
