WHITEWATER, Wis. – Senior
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) became the 22nd player in program history to score 1,000 career points as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (14-5, 4-4) fell at No. 20/23 UW-Whitewater (15-4, 5-3) by a 70-54 final.
Thomson scored a career-best 28 points on the night, a game high. She added 11 rebounds for her second-straight double-double, her fourth of the season.
Thomson scored her first point of the night before the game started by making free throw as a result of an administration technical against UWW.
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) hit a jumper for a 3-0 lead.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) made a jump shot in the final minute, but the Pointers were in an 18-5 hole after one.
Thomson had UWSP's first four points of the second quarter.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) and Thomson hit consecutive three-pointers.
Ava Loftus (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) had four points late as UWSP trailed 34-21 at the break.
Thomson and Gawlitta combined for the first nine UWSP points of the third. Her three to pull the Pointers got within single digits put her past the 1,000-point mark.
Karissa Smith (Freedom, Wis./Appleton North) buried a three and Thomson had four more points late.
Thomson added 11 points in the fourth quarter, but the Pointers couldn't make much of a dent in the deficit.
Following a bye weekend, the Pointers are back on the road on Wednesday (Feb. 5) for a 7:00 p.m. matchup at UW-River Falls.
