OSHKOSH, Wis. – Senior
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) posted a double-double in each match as the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (4-3) split matches at the Mary Peterson Invitational on Saturday. The Pointers fell to Whitworth (5-1) in four sets before rebounding with a sweep of St. Catherine (7-2) to close out the weekend.
Kopp racked up 32 kills and 23 digs on the day. Her 19 kills versus the Wildcats were 11 more than any other player in the match. Against SCU, she added three blocks.
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) also had a double-double on the day recording 30 assists and 10 digs versus Whitworth. She added a match-high 39 assists against St. Catherine.
Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) led the Pointers in digs in both matches with 24 and 17, respectively, on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 1, Whitworth 3 (25-21, 10-25, 16-25, 26-28)
Kopp had a pair of early kills as the teams traded bursts en route to a 13-13 tie.
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) sprinkled in three kills in the set. Kopp posted for kills of her own late, including the set clincher as UWSP took the opening set.
Michalske had two assists and an ace as UWSP took a 4-3 lead in the second.
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) and
Addison Miller (Davenport, Iowa/North) each had a kill, but the Pirates rolled through set two to even the match.
Mosinski had three kills as UWSP stayed close in the third set. Kopp added two kills, but UWSP dropped the third set.
Kopp served two aces and
Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) had her first kill of the season in a 7-0 run as UWSP took a 10-3 lead.
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) and
Ella Trieloff (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Viator) had a pair of kills each as the Pointers led 17-9. Kopp had two late kills setting up the first of two set points, but Whitworth rallied past eh Pointers for a 28-26 win to take the match.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, SCU 0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-18)
Kopp posted eight kills in the opening set as UWSP took the opening set, 25-22. She added eight more in the second set as the Pointers took a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, Michalske had two aces and Mosinski a pair of kills for a 7-3 lead. Shaw had two kills and
Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) added three kills late as UWSP finished off the sweep.
Mosinski was named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the weekend action in Oshkosh.
The Pointers head to Minnesota next weekend for the UNW Tournament. UWSP's first match is against Gustavus Adolphus on Friday (Sept. 13) at 4:30 p.m.
