Pointers Take Four-Setter Versus #12 GAC in Minnesota Opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (5-3) opened play at the UNW Tournament with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23) win over No. 12 Gustavus Adolphus (6-3).
 
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) recorded a season-high 54 assists, one off her career high. She added a career-best 21 digs for the Pointers' lone double-double of the match.
 
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) posted a season-best 29 kills and just missed a double-double with nine digs. Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) matched her career-high with 30 digs.
 
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) were also in double figures with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Emily Nielsen (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) and Abby Nevins (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had 15 digs apiece.
 
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had three early kills as the Pointers had six different players record a kill in UWSP's first eight points. Kopp had six kills, including back-to-back ending the set, and Michalske served two aces as the Pointers ended the opening set with an 8-0 run.
 
Kopp recorded three kills as the Pointers started the second set with a 4-1 advantage. Mosinski added a pair of kills late in the set and Kopp secured a 2-0 lead with a set-clinching kill.
 
Thomka had three kills as UWSP had a 13-11 lead in the third. Shaw and Kopp combined for five kills down the stretch, but GAC took the third set.
 
Kopp and Thomka had seven combined kills as the team tied at 8-8 early in the fourth. Zoe Kramer (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) had a block amid a 4-0 run as UWSP took an 18-15 lead. Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) and Ella Trieloff (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Viator) each had an ace as UWSP secured the four-set win.
 
The Pointers face a pair of ranked foes to wrap up the weekend in Minnesota on Saturday (Sept. 14). UWSP plays host No. 13 UNW at 11:00 a.m. before taking on No. 5 Emory at 1:00 p.m.
