DUBUQUE, Iowa – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (11-6) split its matches at the UD River City Classic on Friday. The Pointers took down host Dubuque (10-6) by a 3-1 final before suffering a 3-0 defeat to No. 11 Millikin (15-2).
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) each had a double-double in UWSP's match versus Millikin. Kopp tied for the match-high with 11 kills and Michalske led all players with 23 assists. Michalske led UWSP with 15 digs while Kopp added 11. The pair both came up one digs shy of a double-double versus UD.
Emily Nielsen (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) led the Pointers with 17 digs against the Spartans.
Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) and
Abby Nevins (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) were both in double digits with 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) and
Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) were in double figures with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, in the win.
Game 1 – UWSP 3, UD 1 (25-15, 19-25, 25-18, 25-17)
Kopp had two kills and a block as the Pointers took an early 8-3 lead. Shaw had a pair of kills to put UWSP back in front, 12-10. Kopp had five more kills as UWSP used a 10-2 run to take the opening set.
Larson had three kills, but UWSP found itself in an 18-9 hole. Shaw added a pair of kills and Michalske served two aces as the Pointers got a late 6-0 run before the Spartans evened the match.
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had a pair of kills as the teams opened the third set tied at 10-10. Larson and Shaw combined for seven kills as UWSP took the set for a 2-1 lead.
Kopp had two kills and a block to give the Pointers a 7-3 advantage to start the fourth.
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and Erlandson each had an ace as the lead grew to 18-7. Kopp added a pair of kills as UWSP finished off the win.
Game 2 – UWSP 0, Millikin 3 (24-26, 14-25, 19-25)
Kopp had three kills as the Pointers went ahead 7-3 in the first. Mosinski and Kopp had two kills each as UWSP built a 17-9 lead. Larson had a kill and a block as UWSP maintained a 21-16 advantage. But Millikin stormed back to tie the set at 22-22. Kopp had a kill to thwart the first Big Blue set point, but UWSP dropped the set, 26-24.
Thomka had the only kill early as UWSP fell behind, 9-5, in the second. Kopp had a trio of kills as UWSP got within one at 11-10. Thomka added one more kill as Millikin pulled away to take the set and a 2-0 lead.
Kopp served two aces and added a kill as the Pointers took a 6-4 lead. Larson posted three kills as UWSP held a 9-7 lead. Thomka had consecutive kills for a 15-15 tie, but Millikin again pulled ahead to finish the three-set sweep.
The Pointers return to play on Friday (Oct. 4) at UW-La Crosse. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
