Pointers Remain Atop League Standings with Five-Set Win at UWL

LA CROSSE, Wis. – It took five sets, but the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (12-6, 3-0) remained unbeaten in league play to stay atop the conference standings with a 3-2 win at UW-La Crosse (6-15, 0-3) on Friday night.
 
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) each recorded double-doubles in the win. Kopp led all players with 16 kills and added 13 digs. Michalske posted a match-high 42 assists and also had 13 digs.
 
Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) led the Pointers with 16 digs. Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) was in double-figures with 13 kills. Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) and Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) added 12 kills each.
 
Shaw racked up five-consecutive kills amid a 10-0 run as the Pointers took control of the first set, 15-5. She added two more kills late as the Pointers finshed with a 5-0 run to take the set, 25-12.
 
Kopp had three kills early as UWSP pulled to within 5-4. Thomka had two kills and a block to spark a 9-0 run that featured a trio of service aces by Kopp. Shaw added three kills and closed the 25-16 set win with an ace.
 
Kopp and Thomka each had a kill and combined on a block as the teams opened the third set tied at 4-4. Kopp served up another ace in a 5-0 run as the Pointers took a 9-5 lead. Mosinski had three kills and a block as the advantage grew to 16-9. Mosinski added three more kills down the stretch as UWL avoided the sweep with a 26-24 win.
 
Thomka had a kill and two blocks as UWSP opened the fourth with a 6-3 lead. Kopp and Thomka combined for four kills and Thomka added a solo block, but the Eagles forced a fifth set with a 25-19 win.
 
Michalske and Thomka posted back-to-back blocks to cap a 7-0 run early in the fifth. Thomka had three more kills as UWSP finished the match on a 6-0 run to take the fifth set, 15-4.
 
The Pointers return home to host the Papa John's Invite beginning on Friday (Oct. 11). UWSP faces Augustana at 7:30 p.m. in Berg Gym.
