Pair of First-Half Goals Power Pointers Past CUW

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (2-3-2) scored twice in the first half to get past Concordia (Wis.) (2-3-0) by a 2-0 final on Saturday.

The visiting Falcons had an early chance, but hit the post in the third minute of play.

Freshman Christa Borchardt (New Berlin, Wis./West) put the Pointers in front in the eighth minute of play. Senior Mara Gustafson (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) sent a free kick in from midfield and Borchardt beat her defender and the CUW goalkeeper to the ball.

In the 11th minute, the Pointers doubled the lead. Gabby Dunn (Dallas, Texas/Bishop Lynch) served in a corner kick. Gustafson's shot attempt was blocked and fell to the foot of Cass Klitzke (Reedsburg, Wis./Reedsburg Area), who ripped the ball into the back of the net.

CUW hit the crossbar in the 80th minute to no avail.

UWSP goalkeeper Erika Panella (Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine) made two saves to keep the clean sheet in the victory. CUW goalkeeper Brooke Braga had 10 saves.

The Pointers wrap up the six-match homestand on Sunday (Sept. 15) with a 1:00 p.m. match against Beloit.
