Saint Joseph, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (0-2-0) rallied from a two-goal deficit, but Saint Benedict scored a late game-winner as the Pointers fell by a 3-2 final.
CSB got on the board in the 16th minute and held a 1-0 lead at the break. The Bennies doubled their lead in the 56th minute as UWSP faced a 2-0 deficit.
Christa Borchardt (New Berlin, Wis./West) netted her second goal of the season in the 67th minute to pull a goal back for the Pointers. Her tally was unassisted.
In the 84th minute, senior
Mara Gustafson (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) tied the match at 2-2 with her second career goal. Fellow senior
Gabby Dunn (Dallas, Texas/Bishop Lynch) had the assist on the goal.
CSB broke the tie and spoiled the UWSP comeback with the go-ahead and decisive goal in the 86th minute.
UWSP out-shot the Bennies in the second half, 11-10.
Jessica Nigbur (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) made four saves in the start.
Erika Panella (Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine) made her UWSP debut in the 44th minute and played the remainder of the match making three saves.
The Pointers will host St. Olaf in the home opener on Wednesday (Sept. 4). Kick off at Point Soccer Bowl is slated for 4:00 p.m.
