WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. – The No. 19 UW-Stevens Point softball team (31-5, 11-3) set a new single season stolen bases record while finishing the regular season with a sweep of UW-Stout (21-17, 6-8) on Friday. The Pointers got a 2-0 win in game one before finishing the sweep with a 6-3 victory in game two.
UWSP had nine stolen bases on the day for a total of 104 during the regular season, the first time in program history with at least 100 stolen bases in a season. The Pointers are just the fourth team in WIAC history with triple-digit steals in a season.
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) had two hits and scored both runs in game one.
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) had two hits and drove in two in game two.
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) had a hit and an RBI in each game.
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and
Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) had two hits each on the day.
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) added to her school and conference record with her 14th save of the season. She earned the win in game two.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) won her 13th game of the season in game one.
Game 1 – UWSP 2, Stout 0
Klicker singled with two away in the third inning. She scored from first on a double by
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) for a 1-0 lead.
Klicker started the sixth with a triple. With two outs, Baker singled to put UWSP ahead, 2-0.
Harwood went 4.0 in the start with just one hit allowed. She struck out five. Zygowski tossed the final 3.0 with four strikeouts to complete the two-hit shutout.
Game 2 – UWSP 6, Stout 3
Roberts worked an 11-pitch walk with one out in the first. She stole second and scored on a single by Baker for a 1-0 lead.
Cibrario singled to start the third inning. Klicker replaced her at first on a fielder's choice. Klicker stole second before
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) drew a walk. Both runners stole and a throwing error allowed both to score on the play for a 3-0 lead.
Meyers and Heckendorf began the fourth with singles.
Emma Stolzman (McHenry, Ill./McHenry Community) moved both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Cibrario singled with two down to drive in both for a 5-1 advantage.
Traxel worked a base on balls to start the fifth. She stole second and moved to third on a single by Meyers.
Lillie Lindgren (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) drove in a run with an RBI groundout to push the lead to 6-1.
The Blue Devils scored twice in the sixth on three hits to close within 6-3.
Elli Matzke (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard North) went 2.2 scoreless frames to start the game. Zygowski pitched 2.1 with three strikeouts and an unearned run allowed. Harwood pitched the final 2.0 with four more strikeouts.
The Pointers will await results from Saturday's WIAC slate to determine their seeding, opponent and the location of next week's WIAC Tournament. UWSP has clinched a bye and will either be the No. 1 or No. 2 seed.
