Baumann, Van Ess With Three-RBI Game Each as Pointers Swept at UWW

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (23-15, 13-9) was swept by No. 7 UW-Whitewater (32-6, 19-3) in a doubleheader to begin the regular season finale series. The Pointers came up short in game one, 8-7, before the Warhawks took game two, 7-3, for the sweep.
 
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) hit a home run for the third-straight game with a three-run shot in game one. Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) drove in all three runs in game two.
 
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) racked up six hits on the day, including a 4-for-4 game two. He scored a run in each game. Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) had two hits each in game one.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 7, UWW 8
UWW took a 1-0 lead in the first on a leadoff solo home run. The Pointers evened things up in the second. Olson and Homolka drew back-to-back two-out walks. Colton Martell (Sussex, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) singled to knot the game at 1-1.
 
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) began the third with a single. Comer followed with a base hit as did Van Ess to push home the first run of the game. Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) hit a ground-rule double to plate another. Baumann then crushed a three-run home run for a 6-1 UWSP lead.
 
Olson and Homolka had consecutive singles to start the fifth. After a fielder's choice put runners at the corners, Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) reached on a sac bunt to drive in a run for a 7-2 advantage.
 
The Warhawks scored four runs in the seventh on five hits. UWW Tied the game with a tally in the eighth and walked off with a run in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Casey Pickering (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) went 6.0 with three strikeouts in the start. Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) pitched 2.0 with a strikeout in relief.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 3, UWW 7
UWSP got on the board first in game two. Tomczak singled with one out. Comer followed with a single and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Van Ess hit a sac fly for a 1-0 lead.
 
UWW scored twice in the second on three hits and a sac bunt to put UWSP behind, 2-1.
 
Tomczak was hit by a pitch with two outs in the third. Comer singled and again both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Van Ess came through with a two-RBI single as the Pointers went in front, 3-2.
 
The lead held until the seventh. The Warhawks scored four runs on three hits and two errors for a 6-3 lead. UWW added a run in the eighth to complete the scoring.
 
Kenny Schultz (Plover, Wis./SPASH) struck out three in 6.1 innings in the start. Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, WIs./Muskego) had one strikeout over the final 1.2 innings.
 
The Pointers close out the regular season with a twin bill at UW-Whitewater on Saturday (May 4) beginning at 12:00 p.m.
