WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (25-15, 15-9) wrapped up the regular season with a sweep of No. 7 UW-Whitewater (32-8, 19-5) on Saturday. The Pointers took Saturday's opener by a 13-5 final. In game two, the Pointers rallied late for a 10-7 win.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) had six hits on the day. He drove in five runs and scored five times.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) had a pair of hits in each game. He also had five RBI on the day.
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) had five hits over the two games and scored a run in each contest.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego),
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) and
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) had two RBI each.
Game 1 – UWSP 13, UWW 5
Baumann hit a ground-rule double to begin the second inning. Olson singled to put runners at the corners. A balk gave UWSP its first run of the game.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) hit a double to put another run on the board. With one away, Boos singled to put runners on the corners. Two batters later, Comer dropped a single into left for a 3-0 lead.
Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) started the third with a single. Baumann drew a walk and Oliver was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) drew a walk to push in a run. A passed ball gave the Pointers another and a Boos groundout made in 6-0. A wild pitch put the Pointers in front, 7-0.
Baumann singled with two away in the fourth. He moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Olson for an 8-0 lead.
After UWW got four runs in the seventh, UWSP got back to work in the eighth. Comer and Van Ess worked consecutive walks. Baumann hit a double to drive in one. Olson hit a sac fly to make it 10-4.
Boos began the ninth with a single. Tomczak was hit by a pitch. Van Ess tripled to drive in both runners. Two batters later, Baumann hit a single to up UWSP's lead to 13-4.
Steven Wintheiser (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) earned the win with 6.1 innings in the start. He struck out three.
Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) and
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) pitched an inning each with a strikeout apiece.
Game 2 – UWSP 10, UWW 7
The Warhawks took a 4-0 lead in the first inning on four hits. UWW added two runs in the fourth inning on three hits for a 6-0 lead.
Baumann hit a solo home run with two outs in the fifth to get the Pointers on the board.
In the seventh, Van Ess drew a one-out walk. Soule followed with a single. Baumann then hit a triple to cut the deficit in half, 6-3.
After UWW got a run in the seventh, Argersinger started the eighth with a single. Two batters later, Tomczak doubled to put two in scoring position. Comer singled to drive in both to get UWSP within 7-5.
Baumann drew a one-out walk in the ninth. With two outs, Oliver singled. Argersinger followed with a single to drive in one. Boos drew a walk to load the bases. Tomczak singled to drive in two and give UWSP an 8-7 lead. Comer followed with a triple to up the lead to 10-7.
Ferry worked a scoreless ninth to secure the win. It was his 29th career save.
Jacob Meinholz (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) worked the first 3.0 innings.
Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) tossed 5.0 in relief with two strikeouts to earn the win.
The Pointers will be the No. 3-seed in the WIAC Tournament and begin play on Thursday (May 9) at 3:00 p.m. against UW-La Crosse in Whitewater.
