OSHKOSH, Wis. – The No. 19 UW-Stevens Point softball team (32-6) dropped a 2-1 score to UW-Whitewater (31-8) in day two action at the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's).
The game turned out to be a pitcher's dual with the teams combining for just nine total hits.
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) hit a single in the second and
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) singled in the third, but the Pointers were not able to break the scoreless tie.
The Warhawks broke through with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth. UWW had just one hit, but an error allowed both runs to score.
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) singled to begin the sixth. Two batters later,
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) reached on a fielder's choice to put two aboard. Traxel moved to second on a failed double-steal attempt. She moved to third on a wild pitch.
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) was hit by a pitch. Another failed double-steal attempt allowed Traxel to score the only run of the game for UWSP.
Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) singled with one away in the seventh. She stole second, but was stranded as the game ended.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) started and went 4.0 innings. She struck out seven and allowed just two hits.
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) pitched 2.0 innings in relief with one strikeout. She allowed two hits and both runs against were unearned.
The Pointers face UW-Oshkosh at 10:00 a.m. in an elimination game on Saturday (May 11). The winner will face UW-Whitewater at 12:30 p.m.
