WHITEWATER, Wis. – The No. 19 UW-Stevens Point softball team (29-5, 9-3) handed UW-Whitewater (24-8, 7-5) its first shutout of the season in a split on Wednesday. The Pointers won a closely contested 1-0 game one, but UWW took game two, 4-2.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) was the UWSP offense in game one, hitting a solo home run to account for the only scoring. She had another hit in game two with a run scored.
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) had two hits in game two with a run scored.
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and
Emma Stolzman (McHenry, Ill./McHenry Community) had a hit and an RBI each.
Game 1 – UWSP 1, UWW 0
Roberts hit the fourth pitch of the game out to left field for a 1-0 UWSP lead.
Starting pitcher
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) made it stand up. She went 4.0 scoreless to pick up her 12 win of the season. She struck out three and scattered a pair of hits.
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) pitched the final 3.0 innings. She completed the shutout with three strikeouts to earn her 13th save of the year.
Game 2 – UWSP 2, UWW 4
UWW hit a solo home run in the second inning. The Warhawks hit two more solo home runs in the third to put UWSP in a 3-0 hole.
Roberts singled to begin the fourth. She moved to third on a double by Traxel. Meyers reached on an infield single with one away to get UWSP on the board. With two down, Stolzman also hit an infield single to get the Pointers within a run at 3-2.
The Warhawks added a run in the fifth to complete the scoring. UWSP had two aboard in the sixth on a single by Traxel and a hit by pitch to
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community), but were unable to push home a run.
Elli Matzke (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard North) had one strikeout in 2.2 innings in the start. Zygowski struck out four in 2.0 frames of relief. Harwood pitched the final 1.1 shutout innings with two strikeouts.
The Pointers close out the regular season against UW-Stout on Friday (May 3). First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
