Harwood Fires Second-Straight No-Hitter as Pointers Sweep SNC

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Freshman pitcher Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) became the sixth pitcher in UW-Stevens Point softball history to toss multiple no-hitters, posting her second-consecutive no-hit gem in a game one win over visiting St. Norbert (5-19). The No. 20 Pointers (18-2) took game one, 8-0 in five innings behind Harwood's no-hitter. UWSP also won game two, 5-2, to finish the sweep.

Harwood struck out eight batters in her 5.0 innings of work. She allowed a single base runner on a walk in the third inning.

Fellow freshman Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) extended her hitting streak to a team-leading 12 games with three hits on the day. She scored five runs and drew a walk in each game.

Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest), Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) and Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) also had three hits apiece on the day. Baker had two RBI and scored three runs. Traxel drove in four in game one and scored a run. Meyers had an RBI in each game with a run scored.

Game 1 – UWSP 8, SNC 0 (5)
Meyers and Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) hit back-to-back singles with one away in the second inning. Emma Stolzman (McHenry, Ill./McHenry Community) reached on a fielder's choice. Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) put down a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error allowed the first run to score.

Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) and Roberts drew consecutive walks to start the third inning. After a double steal, both runners scored on a single by Traxel. Baker was hit by a pitch and Meyers followed with a single for a 5-0 lead. Another SNC miscue and a wild pitch gave UWSP a 6-0 advantage.

Roberts hit a double to begin the fourth. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a third SNC error of the game.

Roberts singled with two outs in the fifth. She stole second and scored the walk-off run on a double by Traxel.

Harwood faced just 16 batters in the game. Her walk in the third was the only SNC base runner. She struck out the side in the first inning, three of her eight strikeouts. Harwood is now 6-1 on the season with a 0.34 ERA.

Game 2 – UWSP 5, SNC 2
Roberts drew a one-out base on balls in the first inning. With two away, she stole second. Baker and Meyers hit doubles back-to-back pitches for a 2-0 UWSP lead.

The Green Knights got their first run of the day in the second inning on a UWSP error, wild pitch and a groundout.

Baker doubled again to start the fourth inning. She scored on a two-out hit by Abby Van Beek (Mayville, Wis./Mayville). Van Beek then scored all the way from first on a double by Otto for a 4-1 lead.

The teams traded runs in the fifth. Roberts doubled with one away in the bottom of the fifth. Traxel doubled and Baker hit a sac fly for UWSP's run.

Elli Matzke (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard North) improved to 6-1 with 4.0 frames in the start. She struck out five. Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) picked up her seventh save of the year with one strikeout over the final 3.0.

The Pointers travel to Rockford on Wednesday (April 10) for a make-up of last week's postponed twin bill. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. in Illinois.
