ROCKFORD, Ill. – The No. 20 UW-Stevens Point softball team (20-2) ran its win streak to 12 games with a sweep of Rockford (9-9) on Wednesday. UWSP took game one by a 5-1 final and completed the sweep with a 7-0 victory in game two.
Sophomore
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) tied the single season saves record with her eighth of the season, matching the previous school record set in 1997.
Freshman pitcher
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) continued her dominance with a season-high 12 strikeouts. She allow one hit in 5.0 innings of work. The hit snapped a streak of 12-consecutive hitless innings by Harwood.
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) led the offense with four hits on the day. She had three RBI and scored a run.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) had three RBI on the day.
Abby Van Beek (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) and
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) drove in two each on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 5, RU 1
Traxel singled with two out in the first inning. She stole second and moved to third on an infield hit by
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community). A double steal put UWSP up, 1-0. Meyers singled to give the Pointers a 2-0 lead.
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) hit a double to lead off the third. Two batters later, Traxel doubled to put the Pointers in front, 3-0.
Lillie Lindgren (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) hit a one-out double in the seventh.
Sawyer Holberg (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) followed with a single to put runners on the corners. With two down, Roberts hit a two-RBI single to extend her hit streak to 13.
The Regents scored their only run of the day in the seventh on two hits.
Harwood improved to 7-1 with 5.0 innings of one-hit scoreless action in the start. The first inning single was the only hit she has allowed in the last 16 innings pitched.
Zygowski pitched the final 2.0 to earn her eighth save of the season. She struck out three.
Game 2 – UWSP 7, RU 0
Klicker singled to begin game two. With two away, she stole second. Meyers put UWSP on the board with an RBI single as the Pointers led, 1-0, after one.
Baker doubled to start the fourth. Meyers followed with another RBI single.
Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and
Emma Stolzman (McHenry, Ill./McHenry Community) each reached on bunt singles to load the bases. Van Beek ripped a pinch-hit single to drive in two.
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) reached on another bunt single to push in a run. Traxel completed the scoring with a sac fly as the Pointers led 6-0.
Holberg reached on an error to start the sixth. Two groundouts with a wild pitch in between gave UWSP a 7-0 lead.
Elli Matzke (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard North) moved to 7-1 on the year with 4.0 innings of work. She struck out two and allowed just one hit. Zygowski fanned three in 2.0 innings of relief.
Caitlin Hartsell (Montgomery, Ill./Oswego) pitched a scoreless frame with two strikeouts.
The Pointers head to UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (April 13) to open league play. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
