STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (12-4, 4-0) belted two home runs in each game of a doubleheader sweep of UW-Eau Claire (5-15, 0-8) to finish off the series sweep. UWSP took game one by an 8-7 final before taking game two in run-rule fashion, 12-2.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) hit a solo home run in each game, two of his five hits on the day. He scored five runs and drove in three while stealing a base in each game.
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) made his return to the starting lineup and had a hit in each game. IN game two, he hit his first home run of the season, a grand slam that put the Pointers ahead for good.
Mason Fink (Verona, Wis./Verona) hit his first career home run in game one, a three-run shot.
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) and
Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) hit safely in both games. Homolka had four RBI on the day and Van Ess drove in two.
Game 1 – UWSP 8, UWEC 7
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower), Comer and Van Ess were all hit by pitches to load the bases with one out in the first. Homolka ripped a double to put UWSP up 2-0.
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) hit a single and the Pointers were up 3-0 after one.
Comer blasted a first-pitch solo home run with two down in the second to increase the lead to 4-0.
Homolka reached on a one-out error in the third. Boos singled with two down. Fink followed with a three-run blast to left, his first career long ball, to put UWSP in front, 7-0.
The Blugolds scored five runs on three hits in the fifth. UWEC added a single tally in the sixth and another in the seventh to comeback to tie the game at 7-7.
Van Ess singled to start the bottom of the seventh and moved to second on an error. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly by Homolka for the eventual game-winning run.
Steven Wintheiser (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) went 4.1 in the start with seven strikeouts.
Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, WIs./Muskego) struck out one.
Joe Schneider (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) earned the win with four strikeouts in 2.0 innings of relief.
Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) struck out two in an inning of work.
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) locked down his third save of the season with a game-ending strikeout.
Game 2 – UWSP 12, UWEC 2 (7)
UWEC got on the board in the top of the first on two hits and a hit batter to put the Pointers behind, 1-0.
Comer doubled to start the fourth inning.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) hit a single and Comer scored on a fielding error to tie the game at 1-1. Homolka singled and another UWEC error loaded the bases with two outs. Boos then launched a grand slam to right to put the Pointers up, 5-1.
Comer belted his second solo home run of the day with one away in the fifth. Tomczak, Van Ess and Homolka drew consecutive walks to load the bases. A fielder's choice plated a run and UWSP held a 7-1 lead after five.
Boos drew a walk to begin the sixth.
Landon Parlier (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) also coaxed a base on balls. Two batters later, Comer hit an RBI single. Van Ess doubled to drive in two more. Homolka drove in one with a groundout and
Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) had an RBI single to push UWSP's lead to 12-1.
The Blugolds got one run in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Jacob Meinholz (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) earned his first win of the year with 5.0 solid frames in the start. He struck out five.
Nathan Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) struck out one in relief.
The Pointers head to UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday (April 10) for a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
