Comer Homers Twice, Pointers Belt Four Dingers in Split at UWO

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The No. 24 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (13-5, 5-1) hit four more home runs in a split at UW-Oshkosh (12-10, 6-4) on Wednesday. The Pointers dropped game one, 7-1, before rebounding with a resounding 14-2 victory in eight innings in game two.
 
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) hit a home run in each game. Both were solo shots.
 
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) had three hits in game two, including a solo home run. He drove in two and scored twice. Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) hit a three-run home run in game two, one of his two hit on the day.
 
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had three hits. He drove in one and scored twice. Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield), Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) and Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) each had a two-hit game on the day.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 1, UWO 7
The Titans broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with five runs on five hits to put UWSP in a 5-0 hole. UWO tacked on a run in the fourth and one more in the fifth for a 7-0 lead.
 
Comer led off the sixth with a solo home run, his fifth of the season, to get the Pointers on the board.
 
UWSP got the leadoff hitter aboard in the seventh and the eighth, but were unable to chip away any further.
 
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) had two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. Nathan Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) struck out five in 2.2 hitless frames. Kaden Krueger (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) had one strikeout in an inning of relief.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 14, UWO 2 (8)
The Titans took a 1-0 lead in the second with a solo home run.
 
Baumann and Comer hit back-to-back one-out solo home runs in the third to give UWSP a 2-1 advantage. Tomczak drew a walk. An error and a wild pitch put two in scoring position. Homolka singled to plate one run. Boos followed with a three-run blast for a 6-1 UWSP lead.
 
Homolka singled again to start the fifth. With two down, Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) reached on a wild pitch to continue the inning. A double steal got UWSP a run. Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) singled to push home another. Baumann doubled to plate another as the Pointers went ahead, 9-1.
 
Oliver had an RBI single in the sixth to give UWSP another run. Tomczak had an RBI double in the seventh for an 11-2 lead.
 
In the eighth, UWSP tacked on three runs without a hit. Homolka and Boos were each hit by a pitch. Oliver drew a walk and a balk plated one run. A groundout pushed in another run and a passed ball put the Pointers up, 14-2.
 
Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) went 5.0 in the start to earn the win. He struck out seven. Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, WIs./Muskego) struck out four in 2.0 frames of relief. Joe Schneider (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) had two strikeouts in a hitless inning of work.
 
UWSP heads to Menomonie to continue league play on the road. The four-game set against UW-Stout begins at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday (April 13).
