STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (10-4, 2-0) opened conference play with a sweep of UW-Eau Claire (5-13, 0-6) on Saturday. The Pointers took game one, 10-4, before finishing the day with a 6-5 win in game two. The series finale scheduled for Sunday (April 7) has been rescheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Monday (April 8).
Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) had five hits on the day, including a 4-for-4 performance in game one. He drove in four runs in game one and scored a run in game two.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) also had four hits in game one. He scored three times and drove in another.
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) had a hit in each game. He drove in a run in game one and scored two in game two.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) had three Rbi in game two.
Game 1 – UWSP 10, UWEC 4
The Blugolds turned three hits and a walk into two runs to put UWSP in a 2-0 hole early.
Tomczak singled with two away in the bottom of the first.
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) drew a walk and both runners moved up on a balk.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Homolka continued the inning with a single that plated two runs for a 2-2 tie after one.
Tomczak doubled with one out in the third inning. Van Ess was hit by a pitch and Oliver walked to load the bases. Homolka again ripped a single with two runs scoring on the play.
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) grounded into a fielder's choice to plate another for a 5-2 lead.
Homolka started the fifth with another single. Two batters later,
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) was hit by a to put two aboard. Adams doubled to drive in one run. Bauman hit a sac fly to push home another as UWSP was ahead 7-3 after five innings.
Tomczak hit his second double of the game in the sixth, an RBI two-bagger following a UWEC error to open the frame. Van Ess walked again and, two batters later, Homolka came through with another RBI single. Olson followed with an RBI fielder's choice for a 10-3 lead.
Casey Pickering (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) settled in after a rough first inning. He went 5.0 with a pair of strikeouts to earn the win.
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) and
Joe Schneider (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) each had a strikeout in relief.
Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, WIs./Muskego) struck out two in a perfect ninth.
Game 2 – UWSP 6, UWEC 5
The Pointers loaded the bases in the first on a pair of walks and a hit batter, but were unable to get on the board. UWSP got two on in the second and another in the third, again to no avail.
Adams broke up the dueling no-hit bids with a two-out single in the fourth. He moved to second on a fielding error in right field and scored on a single by Baumann for a 1-0 lead.
UWEC tied the game in the fifth without a hit. An error, two walks and a sac fly knotted the game at 1-1.
Van Ess and Homolka hit back-to-back singles to begin the bottom of the fifth putting runners on the corners. A double steal gave UWSP a 2-1 lead.
Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) doubled to put two in scoring position. Adams was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two away. Baumann also drew a walk to push in another run for a 3-1 lead.
The Blugolds finally broke up
Kenny Schultz (Plover, Wis./SPASH)'s no-hit bid in the seventh. Two hits and a walk got UWEC back into a 3-3 tie.
Soule drew a leadoff walk in the seventh. After an error, pinch hitter
Tommy Drohner (Plover, Wis./SPASH) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Two batters later, Baumann grounded out to drive in a run and an error allowed another to score on the play.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) followed with a double to put UWSP ahead, 6-3.
UWEC got two runs in the eighth and had the tying run at third in the ninth as the game ended.
Schultz tossed 6.0-plus no hit innings in the start. He went 7.0 and struck out five.
Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) struck out one in 0.2 of relief.
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) earned his second save of the year with 1.1 IP and he struck out three.
The series will conclude on Monday (April 8) with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader at Zimmermann Field.
