Pointers Unable to Overcome Ripon’s Big Second Inning

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (22-13) came up short in its comeback attempt stranding a season-high 16 on base in a 12-9 loss to visiting Ripon (11-20) on Tuesday.

Senior Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) was a triple away from the cycle on the day. He hit the first pitch in the bottom of the first over the fence in right-center, the first of two RBI on the day.

Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) also had two RBI, both on sac flies. Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) hit a home run, one of two hits. Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) had two hits and scored three times. Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) had two hits, an RBI and scored a run.

Boos led off the first with a solo home run on the first pitch.  Two batters later, Comer drew a walk and advanced on a wild pitch. Van Ess dropped a single into right-center for an RBI. He stole second and moved to third as Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) and Baumann drew consecutive walks. Olson hit a sac fly and UWSP had a 3-0 lead.

The Red Hawks erased the UWSP lead and then some putting up seven runs on five hits in the second. Ripon added two more runs in the third to put the Pointers in a 9-3 hole.

Homolka drew another walk to start the third. He moved up on singles by Baumann and Mason Fink (Verona, Wis./Verona) to load the bases. Colton Martell (Sussex, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) hit a sac fly to drive in one run, but that's all UWSP could muster.

Comer was hit by a pitch to begin the fourth. Van Ess and Baumann drew walks to load the bases. Again, an Olson sac fly was the only run UWSP could push home.

The teams traded runs in the fifth. Martell drew a leadoff walk. He scored on a double by Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and an error in the outfield. Ripon added single tallies in the sixth and the seventh to put UWSP behind, 12-6.

In the bottom of the seventh, Comer belted a one-out double. He moved to third on a sharp single to left by Van Ess. Homolka singled to drive in one run, but again, UWSP stranded two aboard.

Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) came on with two away in the eighth and got the Pointers out of a bases loaded jam without a run scoring. In the bottom of the frame, Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) was hit by the first pitch. Two batters later, he scored on a double by Boos.

In the ninth, Baumann hit a two-out solo home run to account for the only offense of the inning.

Steven Wintheiser (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had two strikeouts over 1.2 in the start. Jeremiah Jahnke (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) had one strikeout. Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) worked 4.0 with four strikeouts. Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, WIs./Muskego) struck out three in an inning of work. Ferry recorded a strikeout in 1.1 frames to close out the game.

The Pointers face St. Norbert on Wednesday (May 1) in the regular season home finale. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
