Baseball Splits Again with 13th-Ranked UWL

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (22-12, 13-7) got another split against No. 13 UW-La Crosse (23-10, 12-8) on Saturday. The Pointers rallied for a 17-14 win in game one before coming up just short in an 8-7 loss in game two.
 
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) had six hits on the day with an RBI in each game. He scored three runs, all in game one. Colton Martell (Sussex, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) had three hits in game two, two of which were home runs, and drove in four.
 
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) hit a home run in game one, one of four hits on the day. He drove in three and scored four runs. Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) and Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) had three hits each on the day. Homolka drove in four runs in game one.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 17, UWL 14
UWL scored four in the top of the first on four hits. The Pointers responded with three in the bottom of the frame. Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) had an RBI on a bases-loaded walk. Homolka drove in two with a single.
 
The Pointers took the lead with four runs in the second. Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) drew a leadoff walk and scored on an error. Comer drove in a run on a single. Baumann and Soule had consecutive RBI singles for a 7-4 lead.
 
The Eagles got single tallies in the third and the fourth. In the fifth, UWL put up six runs on five hits for a 12-7 lead.
 
Homolka and Olson had hits to put runners on the corners with one away. Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) hit a sac fly to drive in one. Tomczak then belted a two-run home run to get UWSP within 12-10.
 
Baumann and Homolka drew walks in the sixth. Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) hit a double as UWSP cut the deficit to one, 12-11.
 
Comer singled to begin the seventh. Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) drew a walk. After a sac bunt, Soule was intentionally walked to load the bases. Homolka singled to drive in two. Argersinger singled to reload the bases. Boos drew a walk to push home a home. Tomczak followed with an RBI single to give UWSP a 15-12 lead.
 
Van Ess drew a base on balls to start the eighth. Two batters later, Soule crushed a home run to center for a 17-12 advantage.
 
Jacob Meinholz (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) had four strikeouts in the start lasting 4.0 frames. Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln), Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, WIs./Muskego), Joe Schneider (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) had a strikeout apiece in an inning of relief each. Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) struck out two in a scoreless frame.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 7, UWL 8
UWL scored once in the first and twice in the second to put UWSP in a 3-0 hole early.
 
Van Ess and Baumann hit back-to-back singles to start the fourth. With two away, Martell singled to drive in two runs. Olson doubled to drive in Martell to tie the game at 3-3. After a bunt single by Boos, a wild pitch gave UWSP a 4-3 lead.
 
UWL added two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 7-4 lead over the Pointers.
 
Martell hit his first home run with one out in the sixth. He homered again to lead off the ninth to get UWSP within 8-6. Tomczak drew a two-out walk to continue the ninth. He moved to third on two wild pitches and scored on a single by Comer. Van Ess drew a walk to move the tying run into scoring position. Baumann looped a ball into shallow left-center, but the shortstop snagged it with an over-the-shoulder catch to end the game.
 
Casey Pickering (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) with 5.2 innings with five strikeouts. Steven Wintheiser (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and Crawley had two strikeouts each. Ferry struck out one in a scoreless ninth.
 
The Pointers host Ripon on Tuesday (April 30) for a non-conference game at 3:00 p.m.
