Paulsen Ties Season-High With 10 Strikeouts as Pointers Split with UWL

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (21-11, 12-6) split a doubleheader with No. 13 UW-La Crosse (23-10, 11-7) on Friday. The Pointers won an 11-1 run-rule in game one, but the Eagles took game two, 8-4.
 
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) tied a season high with 10 strikeouts as he tossed all 7.0 in the game one win.
 
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) racked up five hits on the day. He drove in a run and scored three. Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower), Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander), Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) and Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had three hits each over the two games. Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) had a hit and two RBI in each game.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 11, UWL 1 (7)
Boos led off the first with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Tomczak reached on an error and moved to second base on another UWL error as Boos scored on the play for a 1-0 lead. Comer drew a walk and both runners moved up on a sac bunt by Baumann. With two away, Homolka singled to push the advantage to 2-0.
 
Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) hit a double to start the second. He scored on a single by Boos. Comer hit a double with two away to plate Boos. Baumann singled to drive in another and UWSP led, 5-0, after two.
 
UWL got on the board in the third on two hits, a hit batter and a wild pitch.
 
Soule was hit by a pitch to start the sixth. Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) replaced him at first on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a single by Boos. Tomczak hit a double to push home a run and put two in scoring position. Comer was intentionally walked to load the bases. Van Ess ripped a two-out single to push two home. After Homolka drew a walk to reload the bases, Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) drove in two with a single. Soule had an RBI single to push the lead to 11-1.
 
Paulsen struck out at least one batter in all seven innings. He scattered four hits and did not walk a batter in the win.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 4, UWL 8
The Eagles sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six times on six hits and a UWSP error in the first inning. UWL added another run in the second for a 7-0 lead.
 
Argersinger drew a one-out walk in the third. Boos singled to put runners on the corners. Two batters later, Comer singled to drive in one. Baumann followed with an RBI single as UWPS got to within 7-2.
 
Boos led off the fifth with a single. Back-to-back fielder's choices with an error on the second put runners on the corners for the Pointers. With two down, Van Ess hit a two-RBI single to make it 7-4.
 
UWL got an unearned run in the sixth to complete the scoring.
 
Kenny Schultz (Plover, Wis./SPASH) went 5.0 in the start and had two strikeouts. Only three of the runs he allowed were earned. Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, WIs./Muskego) and Jeremiah Jahnke (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) struck out one each in an inning of relief. JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) make his second debut with a scoreless ninth, ending the frame with a strikeout.
 
The Pointers and Eagles wrap up the series on Saturday (April 27) beginning at 12:00 p.m. Senior Day celebration will occur between games.
