Pointers Hold Off UD for 20th Win of the Season

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (20-10) notched its 20th victory of the season, 5-4, at Dubuque (21-15) on Thursday in non-conference action.
 
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) had two hits with an RBI and a run scored. Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) had an RBI single and stole a base. Mason Fink (Verona, Wis./Verona) and Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) had an RBI each.
 
Baumann hit his first single with one out in the second inning. Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) followed with a single and Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) drew a walk to load the bases. Fink reached on an infield single to put UWSP on the board. Olson followed with a sac fly for a 2-0 lead. A double steal by Fink and Homolka pushed the advantage to 3-0.
 
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) was hit by a pitch with one away in the fifth. Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) drew a two-out walk. Comer hit a ingle to plate a run for a 4-1 lead.
 
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) led off the ninth with a single. He moved to second on a balk and to third on a groundout. After a walk by Comer, Baumann singled to put the Pointers in front, 5-2.
 
The Spartans scored two in the ninth, but Steven Wintheiser (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) stranded the tying run at third with a game-ending strikeout for his first career save.
 
Kaden Krueger (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West), Nathan Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) and Wintheiser had one strikeout each as UWSP used seven pitchers in the game.
 
The Pointers return home to face UW-La Crosse in a league series beginning on Friday (April 26). First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
