Leising Posts Career Day in Final Road Matchup Against Northwestern

ST PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's lacrosse team (1-10) dropped its mid-week contest to Northwestern (Minn.) (6-8) on Wednesday, 12-10. The Pointers caught fire late in the fourth, but ran out of time before mounting the comeback.

Marissa Van Dyke (Green Bay, Wis./Green Bay Southwest) got things started for both sides in the first quarter, ripping a goal within the first 50 seconds of the bout. The Pointers followed that up with a man-up strike from Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) off the dish from Katie Stanius (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) to put UWSP up 2-0 early. The Eagles managed to answer with three goals of their own to close the quarter gaining their first lead of the game, 3-2.

The Pointers knotted the score, 3-3, after Van Dyke tacked on a breakaway goal. Northwestern would create another lead-change with a quick response goal. Continuing the back-and-fourth nature, Leising tallied a power-play free-position goal at the 7:32 minute mark of the second quickly answered by an Eagles' goal as Northwestern maintained the lead heading into the half, 6-4.

The Pointers continued their aggressive approach early in quarters, tallying the first goal of the second half from Leising off a dish from Allison Talir (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville Senior). The Eagles responded with a 3-0 run before being halted by Leising again with her fourth goal of the game on a solo effort, with the Pointers down 9-6 heading into the final quarter of play.

The Eagles scored two quick goals to start the fourth before Leising ripped a backhand shot off the feed from Stanius to bring the deficit to four, down 11-7. The Pointers managed a late run 3-1, with two goals scored by Stanius and scoring her first-career goal, Laina Berthiaume (South Haven, Minn./Hutchinson). The late push fell just short as time became a factor, falling to the Eagles, 12-10.

Leising mustered her third-career hat trick performance with a season-high five goals. Van Dyke continued to inch closer to the 50-point mark adding two goals while Stanius facilitated the offense with a team-high two assists and tallying two goals.

Emily Griege (Chesterfield, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) made the start in goal with five saves in a full 60 minutes of play.

The Pointers will return to action for their final game of their inaugural season at home against Colorado College on Saturday (Apr. 27). Opening draw is set for 6:00 p.m.
