Comebacks Fall Short in Pair of Losses at UWO

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (15-9, 7-5) were unable to complete a pair of comebacks as UW-Oshkosh (15-13, 9-7) swept the Pointers on Thursday. UWSP fell in game one, 8-3, before dropping game two, 7-4.
 
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) had three hits, including two home runs, in game two. He drove in three. Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) had two hits apiece in game one. Boos had two RBI.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 3, UWO 8
The Titans built an 8-0 lead after seven innings with three home runs accounting for five of the runs. The Pointers mustered just three hits and two walks without a run over the first seven frames.
 
In the eighth, UWSP finally broke through. Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) led off with a double. Two batters later, Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) reached on an error. Tomczak singled to load the bases. Boos followed with a two-RBI double. Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) then hit a sac fly as UWSP got within 8-3.
 
Jeremiah Jahnke (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) tossed a scoreless inning in the start. Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) went 5.0 and struck out two. Nathan Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) also had two strikeouts in an inning of relief. Riley O'Connell (West Bend, Wis./West) pitched a scoreless frame with one strikeout.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 4, UWO 7
UWO built a 7-0 lead after six innings in game two with two more long balls. The Pointers had a single in the second and another in the third to no avail.
 
Boos drew a one-out walk in the seventh. Two batters later, Van Ess launched a two-run home run to left, his first of the game.
 
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) hit a double to start the eighth. Colton Martell (Sussex, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) recorded his first career hit with a single to put runners at the corners. Comer hit a sac fly as UWSP closed to within 7-3.
 
Van Ess belted his second home run of the game in the ninth. It was a two-out solo shot to complete the scoring.
 
Casey Pickering (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) went 5.0 in the start with five strikeouts. Kaden Krueger (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West), Kale Weisenberger (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) and Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, WIs./Muskego) each worked an inning in relief with one strikeout apiece.
 
The Pointers return home to open a four-game series against UW-Platteville. Game one at Zimmermann Field is set for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday (April 20).
