Pointers Open Series Versus UWP with Sweep on Saturday

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (17-9, 9-5) swept a doubleheader from visiting UW-Platteville (8-15, 4-8) to begin the four-game series on Saturday. The Pointers took game one by a 10-8 final and finished the sweep with an 11-8 win in game two.
 
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) hit a home run in each game and had four hits on the day. He drove in five and scored five runs over the twin bill.
 
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) had three RBI and three runs scored on the day. He homered in game two, one of three hits. Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) and Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) had two hits apiece in each game. Homolka had three RBI and three runs scored. Boos crossed the plate three times on the day.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 10, UWP 8
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) drew a leadoff walk in the first. Tomczak followed with a two-run home run as UWSP quickly took a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Comer doubled. With two away, he scored on a single by Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) to push the advantage to 3-0.
 
The Pioneers tied the game in the fourth with three runs on three hits.
 
Tomczak and Boos hit back-to-back singles to start the fourth for the Pointers. Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Van Ess pushed home one run with another walk. Homolka hit a single to drive in two more for a 6-3 lead.
 
Comer hit an RBI single in the fifth. Adams and Tomczak each had an RBI in the sixth to put UWSP in front, 9-3.
 
UWP closed to within a run in the eighth with five runs on five hits. The Pointers got a run back in the bottom of the eighth on a throwing error.
 
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) picked up the win with 6.0 innings pitched in the start. He struck out a season-high 10. Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) recorded his fourth save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 11, UWP 8
The Pointers loaded the bases with no outs on singles by Adams, Tomczak and Boos. Comer hit a sac fly to get UWSP on the board. With two away, Van Ess singled to drive in a run. Homolka plated two with a single. Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) drove in another run with a single as UWSP held a 5-0 lead after one.
 
Baumann and Van Ess had an RBI each in the second, part of a three-run frame as the Pointers were in front 8-1 after two.
 
Comer led off the fourth with a home run for a 9-1 lead.

The Pioneers scored once in the six and six times in the seventh to get within 9-8.
 
Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) began the eighth with a double. With two away, Tomczak launched his second home run of the day for the 11-8 final.
 
Kenny Schultz (Plover, Wis./SPASH) struck out seven in 6.0 innings to earn the win. Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) struck out three in 1.1 frames of relief. Ferry notched his second save of the day with another scoreless ninth.
 
The Pointers and Pioneers wrap up the series with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday (April 21).
