Van Dyke, Leising Lead Women’s Lacrosse to First Victory in Program History

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's lacrosse team (1-9, 1-4) notched its first program victory over UW-Stout (3-9, 0-4) on Wednesday, winning the bout, 13-6.

Marissa Van Dyke (Green Bay, Wis./Green Bay Southwest) scored the first goal of the game, ripping a quick shot 24 seconds into the matchup. UW-Stout managed a response with two goals of their own before being halted by the Pointers' offense which tacked on three goals to close the first quarter. Katie Stanius (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake), Paige Allen (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Van Dyke all earned goals in the scoring stint all being assisted by Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove), up 4-2.

UWSP continued the scoring barrage in the second, tacking on four additional goals. Van Dyke added two goals while Leising and Allison Talir (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville Senior) tallied one goal each. The Pointers' defense managed a sound second quarter effort without allowing a Blue Devils' goal. The Pointers rolled into the break with their first halftime lead of the season, 8-2.

The Blue Devils came out of the half clicking offensively, entering a quick 3-0 run to start the half. UWSP broke the ice with an unassisted goal by Leising to grow the lead to four. Van Dyke added her fifth goal of the game at the backend of the third, taking a 10-6 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

After a grim start to the fourth with Pointers down a defender due to a yellow card, Van Dyke found Stanius on a breakaway clear for the short-handed goal, putting the Pointers back up by five, 11-6. Stanius had a hot streak in front of the net in the fourth as she ripped another goal at the 6:11 mark off a dish from Leising, tallying her first career hat trick. Van Dyke put the nail in the coffin with three minutes to play with an unassisted goal as the Pointers picked up their first win in program history, 13-6, over the Blue Devils.

Van Dyke and Leising led the way for UWSP with seven points each. Van Dyke led in goals with six and Leising led the team with five assists, seven groundballs and eight draw controls. Abby Rahn (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) logged her first caused turnover of the season, contributing to the steadfast effort from the defensive backline.

Emily Griege (Chesterfield, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) made the start in goal with six saves in a full 60 minutes of play. She registered her first career win while holding the Blue Devils to six goals on 21 shots and 12 shots on goal.

The Pointers will return to action on the road against host Northwestern (Minn.) Wednesday (Apr. 17). Opening draw is set for 7:00 p.m.
