MENOMONIE, Wis. – The No. 24 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (15-7, 7-3) were swept on Sunday by UW-Stout (9-13, 5-10). The Pointers were walked-off on in the opener, 7-6, before dropping game two, 7-3.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) hit a home run in each game, two of UWSP's five home runs on the day.
Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon),
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) and
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) each hit a long ball for the Pointers.
Soule had three hits in game one with two runs scored. Boos had three hits in game two, four on the day.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) drove in two runs in game one.
Game 1 – UWSP 6, Stout 7
Soule opening the scoring in game one with a solo home run with two away in the second. Stout answered with a two-out solo shot in the bottom of the inning and hit back-to-back home runs, a harbinger for things to come.
Adams belted his first career home run, a solo shot, with one out in the third to tie the game at 2-2.
The Blue Devils hit another home run in the bottom of the third. The two-run home run gave the hosts a 4-2 lead.
Boos drew a two-out walk in the fourth. Soule singled and both runners ended up in scoring position. Oliver followed with a two-RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.
Stout regained the lead in the sixth with two singles and a sac bunt in between.
The Pointers got a one-out double in the seventh from
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower).
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) followed with a double as well to tie the game again at 5-5.
Tomczak led off the ninth with a solo home run to give UWSP a 6-5 lead. But back-to-back solo home runs with one away in the bottom of the ninth gave Stout the walk-off win.
Kenny Schultz (Plover, Wis./SPASH) started and went 5.0. He struck out seven.
Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, WIs./Muskego) and
Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) each had two strikeouts in relief.
Joe Schneider (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) struck out one apiece.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, Stout 7
Stout used two hits and a passed ball in the second to take a 1-0 lead.
Tomczak launched his third home run of the weekend, a two-run dinger, to give the Pointers a brief 2-1 lead.
The Blue Devils scored three times in the fifth on two hits and two UWSP errors.
Boos led off the sixth with a solo home run to get UWSP within 4-3.
Stout tacked on two runs in the sixth and another in eighth to close out the scoring.
Steven Wintheiser (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) went 4.1 in the start, He struck out two.
Nathan Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) and
Kaden Krueger (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) had two strikeouts each in relief.
The Pointers travel to UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday (April 17) to wrap up the season series. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
