Pointers Post Double-Digit Runs Twice in Sweep at Stout

MENOMONIE, Wis. – The No. 24 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (15-5, 7-1) posted 23 runs in a doubleheader sweep at UW-Stout (7-13, 2-10) on Saturday. UWSP won game one, 13-6, before finishing the sweep with a 10-2 victory in game two.
 
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had five hits on the day, including a grand slam in game one. He totaled seven RBI on the day and scored two runs.
 
Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) recorded his first career four-hit game in game two. He scored four runs and drove in two. Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) had four hits on the day and Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) added three. Van Ess scored three times with an RBI. Baumann drove in two and scored a run.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 13, Stout 6
Baumann began the day with a single in the top of the first. He moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single from Tomczak. Van Ess followed with a double to make it 2-0. Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) added a double and UWSP was up, 3-0.
 
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) reached on an error to start the second. He stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Baumann hit a single to push the advantage to 4-0.
 
Van Ess doubled with one away in the third. Two batters later, Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) singled to push him home for a 5-0 lead.
 
Mason Fink (Verona, Wis./Verona) drew a one-out walk in the fourth. Adams and Baumann singled to load the bases. Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) drew a walk to drive in a run. A passed ball allowed another to score as UWSP held a 7-0 lead.
 
In the fifth, Homolka drew a base on balls and Boos reached on an error. Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) hit an infield single to load the bases. Fink reached on a fielder's choice to drive in one run. Adams drew a walk to re-load the bases. Baumann hit a sac fly and Comer drew a walk for another bases loaded situation. Tomczak then belted a grand slam for a 13-0 lead.
 
The Blue Devils got two runs on two hits and an error in the fifth. Stout added three runs on three hits in the seventh to extend the game. Stout hit a solo home run in the eighth to complete the scoring.
 
Casey Pickering (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) improved to 5-0 with 6.0 strong innings in the start. He struck out three. Riley O'Connell (West Bend, Wis./West) and Kale Weisenberger (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) each struck out one in relief.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 10, Stout 2
Stout turned two walks, a sac bunt and a wild pitch into a run and a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
 
Ramirez began the third with a bunt single. He moved to second on a sac bunt. Baumann drew a walk. With two down. Tomczak hit a single to tie the game at 1-1.
 
Van Ess and Boos drew consecutive walks to start the fourth. An error loaded the bases. Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) singled to give UWPS a 2-1 lead. Ramirez ripped a double to plate two more. Adams singled to drive in another. Comer hit a sac fly and the Pointers were in front 6-1.
 
Ramirez singled to start the eighth. Comer and Tomczak hit back-to-back two-out RBI doubles to push the Pointers' lead to 8-2.
 
Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) drew a one-out walk in the ninth. Ramirez singled with two away. Adams hit a double and both runners scored for the 10-2 final.
 
Jacob Meinholz (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) struck out a career-high seven in 5.0 to earn the win. Jeremiah Jahnke (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) struck out two in the start. He went 1.2 innings.
 
The Pointers and Blue Devils wrap up the weekend series with a 12:00 p.m. twin bill on Sunday (April 14) in Menomonie.
