LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's lacrosse team (0-8, 0-3) faced off with conference foe UW-La Crosse (8-3, 2-0) on Wednesday, falling to the Eagles, 23-4.
The Pointers got the scoring started in the first as
Marissa Van Dyke (Green Bay, Wis./Green Bay Southwest) netted her first goal of the bout in an unassisted shot on goal. The Eagles quickly responded with a goal of their own to knot the score, 1-1, just 13 seconds later. UW-La Crosse tacked on an additional two goals before Van Dyke found the back of the net again on a free-position opportunity. UWSP wrapped the first quarter of action down, 6-2.
Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) scored the first goal of the second quarter off a dish from
Katie Stanius (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) to reduce the Eagles' lead, 6-3. UWL responded with three goals before Stanius knocked in her first goal of the game off a pass from Leising. The Pointers went into the half down, 11-4.
UWSP was held at bay in the second half, left scoreless in the final two quarters of play. UWL managed to tack on 12 more goals to wrap up the bout, with five goals in the third and seven in the fourth, keeping their foot on the gas down the stretch.
Van Dyke led the Pointers on both ends of the field racking up two goals, six ground balls, and four caused turnovers. Van Dyke, Leising and Stanius all finished with two points each.
Paige Allen (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Leising each tallied a team game-high three draw controls.
Ally Schmidli (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) made her first start in goal with five saves in one half of play.
Emily Griege (Chesterfield, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) played the second half and made four saves. Schmidli was credited with her first loss of the season.
The Pointers will continue their busy week on the road at UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Apr. 13). Opening draw is set for 2:30 p.m.
