Van Dyke Nets UWSP Women’s Lacrosse’s First Goal In Inaugural Game at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's lacrosse team (0-1) opened their inaugural season against Hamline (3-1) with a 10-4 defeat. The Pointers logged a loss against the seasoned Pipers, but managed a tight game through halftime.

After getting down 2-0 early in the first quarter, freshman Marissa Van Dyke (Green Bay, Wis./Green Bay Southwest) netted the Pointers women's lacrosse program's first-ever goal on an unassisted shot in front of two defenders.

In the second, Allison Talir (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville Senior) knotted the score at 2-2 after earning a free position opportunity off of a Hamline foul. The Pipers capped off the half with a buzzer-beater goal to take a 3-2 closely contested lead.

Hamline came out of the half strong as the contest quickly became an eight-point lead early on into the fourth after a 7-0 run.

With 4:41 remaining in regulation, Van Dyke managed to find Paige Allen (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) for a nifty goal. Soon after, Van Dyke dished another dime to a cutting Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) who found herself with a one-on-one against the Pipers' goalkeeper managing to capitalize with a goal, cutting the lead to the final 10-4 score.

UWSP goalkeeper Emily Griege (Chesterfield, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) made the start in goal with 15 saves in net in 60 minutes of play.

The Pointers remain on the road as they travel to Iowa to face Cornell on Saturday (Mar. 16). Opening draw is set for 1:00 p.m.
