MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The UW-Stevens Point women's lacrosse team (0-2) continued to add historical accolades in its inaugural season with the program's first hat trick. The Pointers dropped their second game of the season against Cornell (6-1) by a final of 15-7.
The Pointers got on the board first in the opening quarter with their first lead of the season from an unassisted goal by
Marissa Van Dyke (Green Bay, Wis./Green Bay Southwest). The Rams quickly matched UWSP and more by entering a 3-0 run until
Alyssa Yokom (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) went coast-to-coast to earn a slashing goal, her first of the season, taking the Cornell lead down to 3-2.
The Pointers capped off the first quarter with a goal from
Allison Talir (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville Senior) to knot the score, 3-3.
In the second, Cornell regained the lead minutes in the fresh quarter to earn a 5-3 lead. The Pointers again were able to respond with two goals of their own as
Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) scored on a free-position opportunity and Van Dyke earned an open window shot off of a dish from Leising to head into the half tied, 5-5.
Cornell opened the second half strong entering a 7-0 run to grow their lead to 12-5 going into the final quarter of regulation.
Van Dyke ended the 8-0 run from the Rams with a man-up goal with 11:47 remaining in the fourth, notching the Pointers' first hat trick scorer in program history. Quickly after her historic goal, Van Dyke tacked on another goal from a quick pass from Leising to end the scoring at seven for the Pointers in a 15-7 loss.
Leising finished the day with three points, two assists, one goal and a season-best nine draw controls. Three Pointer defenders had three caused turnovers each from
Dylan Wall (Plover, Wis./SPASH),
Paige Allen (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and
Laina Berthiaume (South Haven, Minn./Hutchinson).
UWSP goalkeeper
Emily Griege (Chesterfield, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) made the start in goal with 17 saves in net in 60 minutes of play.
The Pointers cap off their three-game road trip with a return to Minnesota to take on Augsburg on Saturday (Mar. 23). Opening draw is set for 4:00 p.m.
