RHINELANDER, Wis. – The No. 23 UW-Stevens Point softball team (16-2) recorded the 22nd no-hitter in program history and shut out St. Scholastica (3-11) twice in a sweep on Friday.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) and
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) combined for the no-hitter in a 3-0 game one win. The Pointers finished the sweep with a 4-0 victory in game two.
Zygowski struck out 11 on the day earning her sixth save of the year in game one. She won game two to improve to 6-0 on the season.
Harwood struck out six in the no-hitter. She allowed one base runner, a walk in the fourth inning. She is now 5-1.
Offensively,
Abby Van Beek (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) had a clutch two-RBI hit in game one, one of her two pinch hits on the day.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) belted her team-leading second home run of the season, one of three hits on the day.
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) had four hits, two in each game, with an RBI and a run scored in game one.
Game 1 – UWSP 3, CSS 0
Meyers singled to begin the second inning.
Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) reached on a bunt single and both runners moved into scoring position on a groundout by
Emma Stolzman (McHenry, Ill./McHenry Community). Van Beek then ripped a two-run single up the middle for a 2-0 lead.
Roberts started the third with a single.
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) replaced her at first on fielder's choice. Traxel stole second and moved to third on a flyout. Meyers then slashed a ground-rule double down the line in left to make it 3-0.
Harwood tossed 5.0 hitless frames and faced just one over the minimum. Zygowski held the Saints hitless over the final 2.0 to earn the save.
Game 2 – UWSP 4, CSS 0
Roberts broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with a leadoff solo home run, a no-doubter to left.
In the fifth, Van Beek led off with a single. She moved to third on a sac bunt and a groundout.
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) reached on a two-out error as Van Beek scored to make it 2-0. Roberts hit a ground-rule double to put two in scoring position. Traxel followed with a single to drive in two more for a 4-0 advantage.
Elli Matzke (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard North) went 3.0 in the start. She struck out four and worked out of a jam in the first inning stranding two. Zygowski fired the final 4.0 with six punchouts to earn the win.
The Pointers head to Rockford on Wednesday (April 3) for a twin bill. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
