DAVENPORT, Fla. – Back-to-back solo home runs in the sixth inning helped the UW-Stevens Point baseball team (5-4) secure an 8-5 win over William Paterson (5-11) on a soggy and windy Friday morning in Florida.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) hit the first of the consecutive home runs. It was one of his three hits, one of his three RBI and one of his two runs scored in the game.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) hit the other solo shot just two pitches later. He had two hits and two RBI on the day.
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) continued his hot hitting with a double among two hits. He drove in two and nearly legged out one of his two sacrifice bunts for another hit.
Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) and
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) had two hits each and combined to score three runs.
Baumann led off the game with a single through the right side.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) was hit by a pitch and
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) drew a walk to load the bases.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) hit a sac fly to give UWSP a 1-0 lead.
Olson began the second with a double.
Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) drew a walk and both runners moved up on a sac bunt by Adams. Baumann hit a sac fly to drive home the first run of the inning. Comer followed with an RBI single to put the Pointers up 3-0.
The Pioneers got single runs back in the second and in the third on two hits in each frame.
Homolka started the fourth with a single. Adams moved him into scoring position with another sac bunt. He then scored on a single by Baumann to push the advantage to 4-2.
In the sixth, Baumann and Comer hit back-to-back one-out solo home runs on 0-1 counts to up the lead to 6-2.
WP got two runs in the sixth and another in the eighth to send the game to the ninth with UWSP holding a 6-5 lead.
Soule walked to begin the ninth. Olson singled and Homolka dropped a sac bunt to move both into scoring position. Adams followed with a two-RBI double to right-center cushioning the lead to 8-5.
WP had a pair of hits in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't get a run home leaving the tying run at the plate as the game ended.
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) picked up his first win of the season. He went 6.0 with eight strikeouts.
Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) tossed 1.2 in relief with two strikeouts.
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) earned the save with 1.1 IP and he struck out one.
The Pointers close out the RussMatt Tournament in Florida on Saturday (March 23). UWSP is slated to face Framingham State at 9:30 a.m. ET.
