AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (1-3) scored all 13 runs in the final five innings to rally for a 13-9 victory over Ramapo (3-4) in the opener for both teams in the RussMatt Invitational.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) recorded three hits, including his first home run of the season, and drove in four.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) combined for five hits, five runs and each had two RBI.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) had two hits, drew two walks and scored three runs.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) hit the other home run on the day, a solo shot in the seventh.
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) drove in two, had hit, drew a walk and scored a run.
The Pointers faced an early deficit as Ramapo plated an unearned run in the first. The Roadrunners tacked on four in the second on a pair of two-run home runs to put UWSP in a 5-0 hole.
Tommy Drohner (Plover, Wis./SPASH) reached on a Ramapo error to begin the fifth. Two batters later, Comer singled to put runners on the corners. Tomczak roped a double down the left field line to push home a run. Van Ess followed with a sac fly as the Pointers made it 5-2.
Baumann led off the seventh with a solo home run. Comer and Tomczak drew walks and Van Ess was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) singled to push across one run. With two away, Olson dropped a two-run single into center to put the Pointers ahead, 6-5.
Ramapo regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh with three runs on one hit and one UWSP miscue.
Van Ess drew a two-out walk in the eight. Oliver followed and hit an 0-2 pitch off the top of the fence and over for a game-tying home run.
Olson began the ninth with a walk.
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) reached on a bunt single. Comer drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Tomczak and Van Ess each singled to drive in a run. A wild pitch plated another. Oliver then hit a two-run double to center to push the lead to 13-8.
Ramapo got one run in the ninth, but stranded two aboard as the game ended.
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) struck out two and went 4.2 innings in the start.
Joe Schneider (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) recorded the only other strikeout on the bump for UWSP in 0.2 frames of relief.
Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) recorded his first career win with a scoreless eighth.
The Pointers face Amherst on Monday (March 18). First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m. ET.
