AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (2-3) got a career-high five RBI from
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) in an 11-7 victory over Amherst (2-2).
Van Ess hit one of UWSP's two home runs in the game, a three-run shot in the fourth that cushioned the Pointers' early lead. He had two hits and a walk on the day.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) belted the other UWSP home run and had three hits. He drove in two and scored three runs.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) and
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) each recorded two hits and both scored three runs.
The Mammoths got on the board first, taking advantage of a hefty breeze blowing out that helped a solo home run put Amherst in front, 1-0.
Comer answered with a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the first. Tomczak followed with a single and Van Ess drew a walk to put two aboard.
Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) reached on an infield single and
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) was hit by a pitch to push home another run.
Baumann tripled to right-center with one down in the second. Comer then hit a single through the right side for a 3-1 UWSP lead.
In the third,
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) drew a leadoff walk. He moved to second on a two-out wild pitch.
Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) drove him in with a single to left-center to put the Pointers up, 4-1.
Baumann and Comer singled back-to-back to begin the fourth. Tomczak hit the third-straight single to push a run home. Van Ess then launched a three-run shot to center for an 8-1 advantage.
Amherst hit its second home run of the day as part of a three-run fifth.
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) started the bottom of the fifth with a single. Baumann drew a walk and Tomczak was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Van Ess followed with a two-RBI single for a 10-4 lead. Oliver drew a walk to reload the bases and Soule was hit by a pitch to extend the lead to 11-4.
The Mammoths got one run in the seventh and two in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Casey Pickering (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) earned the win on the hill with 5.0 in the start.
Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) picked up the save firing the final 4.0. He struck out three.
UWSP will face a pair of top-10 foes on Tuesday (March 19) with a 9:45 a.m. ET matchup with Endicott before facing Johns Hopkins at 1:15 p.m. ET.
