STEVENS POINT, Wis. – For the eighth time in the last 10 years, the No. 8 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (18-5-1, 12-2-0) claimed the WIAC regular season championship, doing so with a 2-1 win over UW-Superior (11-12-1, 6-7-1).
UWSP goaltender
Alex Proctor (Allen, Texas) had six saves in a scoreless first period as the Pointers out-shot the Yellowjackets, 9-6.
Dawson Sciarrino (Greensburg, Pa.) broke the scoreless tie at 1:24 of the second period.
Nico Chmelevski (Northville, Mich.) and
Owen Dean (Calgary, Alberta) picked up assists.
At 15:05 of the second period,
Cody Moline (North Branch, Minn.) buried a shorthanded goal off a feed from Chmelevski on a 2-on-1.
Mick Heneghan (Niles, Ill.) added an assist on the eventual game-winner.
Exactly a minute later, the Yellowjackets got on the board via a fluke goal. Tyler Ryder ripped a high shot that ricocheted off the glass and off Proctor's back into the goal.
Neither team scored in the third period as the Pointers prevailed to seal the league title. Proctor had 26 saves in the win. UW-Superior goaltender Jack Boschert made 34 saves.
Following the UWSP win, UW-Stout finished a 2-1 win over UW-Eau Claire giving the Pointers the out-right league championship.
The Pointers will conclude the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 10) against UW-Superior. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. with Senior Night festivities to occur pregame.
