STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (14-8, 3-8) held their own for most of the first half in an eventual 64-51 loss to No. 10/12 UW-Whitewater (19-3, 8-3) on Wednesday night.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) led the Pointers in scoring with 14 points.
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) added nine and dished out a game-high seven assists.
Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) led the Pointers with eight rebounds.
Pfeifer scored UWSP's first four points and Nies added a bucket as the Pointers stayed within 8-6 early.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and
Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) each made a field goal and the Pointers trailed 18-13 after one.
Pfeifer and Nies combined for the first six points of the second. Gawlitta made consecutive layups to tie the game at 23-23. Pfiefer made a layup of her own and the Pointers led, 25-23 with 6:14 left in the first half.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) completed an and-one as the Pointers were down just 30-28 at the break.
Pfeifer hit a three to begin the third and UWSP gained the lead, 31-30. Hagen made a layup amid a 15-2 run by UWW to take control of the game.
Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) buried a three and had four points as UWSP trailed 47-37 heading to the fourth.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) nailed a three and had five early points as UWSP closed to within 49-44.
Emily Mortenson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) hit a jumper to halt a 13-2 run by UWW. Nies hit a jumper in the closing seconds to wrap up the scoring.
The Pointers travel to UW-Platteville on Saturday (Feb. 10) for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
