Thomson Posts Double-Double for Pointers at Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Junior Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) notched her second double-double in the last three games, but the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (14-9, 3-9) dropped a 59-55 final at UW-Platteville (14-9, 7-5).

Thomson led the Pointers in scoring with 13 points and had a game-high 10 rebounds. Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) was also in double figures with 11 points.

Pfeifer buried a pair of threes to open the game. Thomson completed an and-one and Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) made a layup for an 11-2 UWSP lead. Ava Loftus (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) and Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) had a field goal each as the Pointers' lead was just 15-12 after one.

Thomson scored the first four points of the second quarter to push UWSP's lead to 19-12. Emily Mortenson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) nailed two three-pointers as UWSP held a 26-24 advantage at the half.

Thomson hit from beyond the arc twice early in the third and a Hagen layup gave UWSP a 36-27 lead. Loftus and Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) hit back-to-back jumpers, but a three at the buzzer gave the Pioneers a 43-40 edge heading to the fourth.

The UWSP deficit was 11 when Pfeifer drilled a three. Krueger hit a three on the next possession and a layup by Campion got the Pointers within three following the 8-0 run. Krueger sunk another three with 1:24 remaining, but the Pointers couldn't capitalize as UWP hit just 2-of-4 free throws.

The Pointers travel to UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday (Feb. 14) for the final road game of the season. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
