Pointers Win at UWL, Sweep Season Series

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (14-7, 3-7) won at UW-La Crosse (11-10, 4-6) by a 64-60 final on Saturday. It was UWSP's first win in La Crosse and first season sweep since the 2015-16 season.
 
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) had a game-high 18 to lead the Pointers. Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) added 17 and Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) poured in 15 to round out the trio in double digits. Thomson posted a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
Gawlitta had five early points as UWSP jumped in front 7-0. She had six more points down the stretch with Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) hitting a three as the Pointers led, 18-9 after one.
 
Nies and Thomson combined for UWSP's first six points in the second. Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) added four as the lead reached 28-17. Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) had a layup late and the Pointers were in front at the half, 30-23.
 
Thomson had eight points, including a pair of three-pointers as the lead was 42-31 midway through the third. Gawlitta and Thomson each hit a pair of free throws as UWSP regained the lead late, 46-42, following an 11-0 UWL run.
 
Nies had four points as UWSP clung to the lead to begin the fourth. Nies and Thomson combined for UWSP's final nine points of the game as UWSP held off the late charge by the Eagles.
 
The Pointers will be back home on Wednesday (Feb. 7). Tip-off in Berg Gym against UW-Whitewater is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
