STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (8-5) won both matches of the tri it hosted on Saturday by sweep. The Pointers earned a 3-0 win in the opening match and closed the day with a 3-0 victory over Viterbo.
Josh Brogren (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) posted another double-double in the win over the V-Hawks. He had a match-high 35 assists and led the Pointers with 10 digs.
Zach Meyers (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) led all players in kills in each match with 11 and 17, respectively.
UWSP 3. BSC 0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-11)
The Pointers trailed in the first set, 16-10, before UWSP posted a 5-0 run.
Spencer Baeckman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) had two late kills and the Pointers ended the set with a 4-0 spurt.
Meyers had five kills in a 13-4 run as UWSP took a 16-9 lead. Baeckman had two late kills again and Meyers gave the Pointers set point.
Dylan Niznik (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) and Baeckman combined for back-to-back blocks to give the Pointers a 6-2 advantage to begin the third.
Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) had ana ace in the 7-0 run as UWSP completed the sweep.
UWSP 3, Viterbo 0 (25-20, 25-21, 30-28)
Niznik had two kills and a block as the Pointers jumped in front, 9-3, in the first set. Meyers had consecutive kills to spark a 4-0 run as UWSP regained the lead at 16-14.
Wren Dietz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) had a pair of blocks as UWSP closed the set on an 8-4 burst.
Dietz had two kills and an ace as UWSP went up 8-6 early in the second. Smith had three kills and an ace in a 6-1 run to put UWSP in front, 18-16. Brogren served an ace as the Pointers wrapped the set with a 4-0 run.
Meyers and Dietz had two kills each to put the Pointers in front, 8-4. Meyers had four more kills as UWSP took a 14-9 lead. Smith and Dietz posted a kill in a 6-1 run as UWSP led, 20-15. Meyers had three kills down the stretch as the Pointers prevailed with a 30-28 win.
The Pointers head to Marian on Saturday (March 2) for an 11:00 a.m. match.
