Men’s Basketball Unable to Overcome Early Deficit

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (12-12, 6-7) fell behind early and were unable to recover in a 75-65 loss to UW-Eau Claire (11-13, 4-9) in the regular season home finale.

Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) led the Pointers with 16 points. Senior Ryan Genrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) and junior Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) added 13 points each. Cal Krohn (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) was also in double figures with 10 points. Abdul-Wahid led UWSP with nine rebounds.

Abdul-Wahid had the Pointers' first eight points of the game with a pair of threes in the process, but UWSP trailed, 18-8, eight minutes. Bolden and Genrich had five points each, but the deficit teetered near 10.

Krohn added eight in the half and senior Ryan Peterson (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) converted three free throws. Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) nailed the Pointers' fifth three-pointer, but the deficit was 41-34 at the half.

Bolden buried a pair of threes in a 10-0 run as the Pointers pulled even at 44-44. The Blugolds countered with an 11-0 run before Genrich hit another three.

Krohn, Abdul-Wahid and senior Jake Buchanan (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) each scored a layup as UWSP tried to hold the deficit under 10. Genrich hit a jumper ending a four-minute drought by both teams. Abdul-Wahid, Bolden and Genrich each had three points down the stretch, but UWEC held off the late UWSP charge.

The Pointers head to UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Feb. 17) for the regular season finale. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
