STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (12-11, 6-6) finished a season series sweep of WIAC Champions UW-Platteville (19-4, 10-2) by an 83-80 final on Saturday, handing the Pioneers just their second league loss of the season.
Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) again led the Pointers in scoring with 19 points.
Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) and
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) were also in double figures with 14 and 13, respectively.
Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) led the Pointers with seven rebounds.
Miron had five early points, including a three-pointer, as the Pointers jumped ahead 9-3. Abdul-Wahid sandwiched threes by
Logan Baumgartner (Medford, Wis./Medford) and
Jake Buchanan (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) with jumpers for a 19-8 lead.
Buchanan and
Ryan Genrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) accounted for UWSP's points as the Pioneers used an 18-4 run to take a 26-23 lead. Bolden and Miron each drilled a three and UWSP regained the lead, 31-29 at the break.
Butler scored the first four points for UWSP in the second half and
Cal Krohn (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) had the next five as the Pointers went ahead, 40-33. Miron, Butler and Baumgartner each hit from beyond the arc and the lead was 55-50 midway through the second half.
Buchanan had four-straight points for UWSP, but the Pioneers got within two with 4:02 remaining. Abdul-Wahid drilled three-straight threes as the lead was eight with two minutes left. The Pointers hit 10-of-12 free throws down the stretch to hold off a late charge by UWP.
The Pointers will host UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday (Feb. 14) in the final home game of the season. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
